The AS4024.1, ISO13849, AS/IEC61508 and AS/IEC62061 standards are now an integral part of the specification, design, installation and operation of electrical / electronic and mechanical safeguards for mining plant and equipment in Australia . These standards have been mandated for new plant in the mining WH&S regulations in New South Wales since 2006, and have found increasing application in the other states.

This process has been developed by Marcus Punch Pty. Ltd. to address apparent shortfalls in the safety integrity of control and protective systems installed on some plant used within the NSW mining industry, particularly any plant installed prior to the 2006 or plant that was not subject to AS4024.1, ISO13849, AS/IEC61508 or AS/IEC62061 standards during the specification and design phases.

Essentially, the process:

· Is a risk-based method for rapidly assessing the adequacy of safety-related control and protective systems installed on legacy (existing) plant.

· Determines a probability of failure for each safety function that is appropriate for the degree of risk posed.

· Is a ‘4-step’ methodology with associated training and analysis tools to enable site engineers to quickly perform functional safety assessments on their own legacy (existing) plant.

· Is flexible, allowing tailoring to an organization’s specific requirements.
